TEAHUPOO, Tahiti (Friday, August 12, 2010) – Event No. 5 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pro Teahupoo, boasts a venue largely considered one of the most dangerous waves on the planet, and with solid swells projected and the added pressure of the mid-year ASP field reduction, this season’s Billabong Pro Teahupoo is turning into one of the heaviest events in history.Culminating the first half of the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pro Teahupoo will be the final opportunity for the ASP Top 45 to secure the results needed to finish in the Top 32 on the ASP World Title rankings.… Read the rest

PHUKET SURFERS TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE LOST IN 26 DECEMBER TSUNAMI

[i]Phuket’s surfing community will honour the victims of last years Tsunami caused by a 9.0 earthquake near Sumatra which devastated southern Thailand on Dec. 26, 2004, with a “paddle out”.

As most of the club members live or at least spend a good deal of time on or near the beach, the ceremony will be especially poignant as they
themselves lost family, friends, and livelihoods to the Tsunami.

During the ceremony, participating surfers will paddle their boards
offshore and join hands to form a large floating circle. Following
tradition, they will sprinkle flowers into the sea and observe a minute’s
silence in memory of those that perished.

Phuket Boardriders Club, said the gesture is a tradition for surfers honouring one of their own, but this circle will go further than that to reflect the Thai and expatriate surfers’ bond to the island and more importantly to it’s people.[/i]Though… Read the rest

The Roxy Pro Hawaii is again on hold, but with half of the 12 day waiting period still remaining and a promising swell forecast for the remainder of the window, event officials are confident that the world’s top women surfers will enjoy first-rate conditions when the event does get underway. The Roxy Pro Hawaii is the first event of three comprising the women’s Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.Underway at Ali’i Beach Park, Haleiwa today, however, is rounds two and three of the Op Pro Hawaii, the first event of the men’s Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Competitors are currently contesting eight to 12 foot surf similar to that which they braved yesterday.

Of immense interest to fans yesterday was the performance given by young Jon Jon Florence, a 13-year-old Hawaiian whose entry into the event made him the youngest man to surf in the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series.… Read the rest

A significant swell slated to arrive tomorrow and build into Thursday has prompted event officials to put the Roxy Pro Hawaii on hold again today. The one to three foot (1 meter) conditions that were on offer at Ali’i Beach Park in Halewia this morning are predicted to increase in size to six to eight feet (2 to 2.5 meters) by tomorrow afternoon, and peak at almost double that on Thursday.[/i]Though the Roxy Pro Hawaii can be run in its entirety in just two days, the event is being held in tandem with the Op Pro Hawaii, a six-star prime men’s World Qualifying Series (WQS) event that requires roughly four days of surfing to complete.… Read the rest
