Flat seas have again seized Ali’i Beach Park, Haleiwa, home of the 11th Annual Roxy Pro Hawaii, and another lay day has been called. With roughly a week and a half left in the event waiting period and the North Shore’s first sizeable winter swell predicted to hit during the latter portion of this week, event officials are confident that competitors will enjoy first-rate waves once we do get underway.[/i]First to fare the waves once they arrive will be young Hawaiian trialists Bethany Hamilton, Carissa Moore, Tory Titcomb and Chastity Baltazar. The winner of the trials heat will go straight into round one of the main event where she’ll meet reigning world champion and current ratings leader Sofia Mulanovich (PER) and Australian surfer Serena Brooke in heat three.

As one of the final two stops on the women’s World Championship Tour (WCT), points earned here and then in Maui are of the utmost importance to women sitting low on the WCT ratings.… Read the rest

Live on www.aspworldtour.com and www.roxy.com/roxypro

The Roxy Pro Hawaii, the second to last event on the 2005 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, will enter it’s 12-day waiting period at Haleiwa’s Ali’i Beach Park on Oahu’s North Shore tomorrow, Saturday, 12 November.

The event, in terms of its history and its bearing on the yet to be decided 2005 world title race is of obvious extreme importance plus it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of competitive women’s surfing.[/i]Notably absent from the roster however will be former six-time world champion and long shot contender for the 2005 world title, Layne Beachley (AUS). Citing a herniated disc in her neck, Beachley has withdrawn from competition for the rest of the year and is currently exploring the possibility of surgery, an option that would likely waylay her for all of 2006 as well.… Read the rest

Spectators on the beach and those watching the live webcast from the Nova Schin Festival presented by Billabong witnessed one of the most phenomenal acts in surfing and sporting history today when Kelly Slater from Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA claimed an incredible seventh Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour crown.
[/i]Despite being eliminated in round four of today’s event, by stable-mate Travis Logie (ZAF), all things fell into place for Slater when his only rival for the title, Andy Irons (HAW) was eliminated by Nathan Hedge (AUS) in the quarter finals. In order to keep the title race alive going into Hawaii – with Slater’s early elimination – Irons had to finish at least third in this event.

After a shaky start to the Nova Schin Festival, Slater looked to be back to his best in round three where he defeated wildcard Guilherme Ferriera (BRA) but in the heat against Logie he stalled, falling on a few occasions and perhaps making some wrong decisions regarding wave choice.… Read the rest

Surfing fans all over the world were glued to their computer monitors or TV screens today watching the live broadcast of the Nova Schin Festival presented by Billabong in Brazil.

And knowing that if Andy Irons (HAW) were to lose and then finish behind Kelly Slater (USA) in the event, the 2005 Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour crown will go to Slater, it’s no doubt that all and sundry felt an anxiety rush as both surfers hit the water in their round three heats against rookie Brazilians. [/i]Throughout the previous rounds and the earlier heats of the day, the hungry locals, who revel in the smaller beach break conditions, caused many an upset and potentially could have easily derailed either or both Slater’s and Iron’s 2005 Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour title campaigns.… Read the rest

Organisers have blown the starting hooter for surfers in round two, heat seven of the Nova Schin Festival presented by Billabong in Brazil, with the intention of completing as many as 20 heats today. This will take the event to heat 10 of round three.

All going to plan this will mean that the highly anticipated heats including Kelly Slater (USA) (heat eight, round three) and Andy Irons (HAW) (heat nine, round three) will hit the water around 5pm this afternoon. Their opposition in those heats has yet to be decided.[/i]Competitors in the 10th event on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour will have to face smallish onshore conditions, but there is enough push in the swell to allow the surfers to execute some satisfactory turns.… Read the rest
