Day one of the Rockstar Games Honolua Bay Pro, presented by Mike Stewart Science Bodyboards, saw early morning waves in the 3-5 ft. range with classic conditions and mild offshore trade winds at around 10 MPH. The morning crew checking the waves looked like a page right out of Movement Magazine, with 2x World Champion Damien King, Jeff Hubbard, 9x world champ, Mike Stewart and South African/World Traveller Brandon Foster all looking poised for yet another memorable day at the Bay. By the start of Round 1 at 10am, the waves were already pushing six feet and riders were pushing limits from the outset. The first standout wave of the day came in Heat #2 as Jason Pembrook pulling into a clean, hollow, six-foot wave on the outside, exiting cleanly a few seconds later, scoring him a 7.0 out of 10.… Read the rest

SURFERS CIRCLES AT PATONG AND KAMALA BEACHES

December 26 2005 posted by SWD

In ceremonies held on December 26 2005 at Patong beach and Kamala beach, Phuket’s surfing community honoured the victims of last years Tsunami caused by a 9.0 earthquake near Sumatra which devastated southern Thailand on Dec. 26, 2004, with a “paddle out” to form a “surfers circle” with a minute’s silence in the water and casting of flowers into the ocean. The circle and strong emotions that went with it only helped in strengthening bonds between surfers on the island.

Though traditionally a way to mourn the loss of a fellow surfer, Phuket surfers felt that a surfer’s circle was the most appropriate way for them to pay their respects to those who were lost to the sea’s wrath one year ago.

As most of the surfers live or at least spend a good deal of time on or near the beach, the ceremony was especially poignant as they themselves lost family, friends, and livelihoods to the Tsunami.… Read the rest

Bustin’ Down the Door

Bustin’ Down the Door

Bustin Down the Door surf movie
Bustin’ Down the Door

The surfing documentary “Bustin’ Down the Door” focuses on the Australian and South African surfers that pioneered pro surfing back in the 1970s. It is a true and candid story of how the early pioneers of modern day surfing made the almost impossible climb to the top.

If you are a surfer you will love this movie, if you don’t surf…..You will love this surf movie 🙂

I have watched this movie many times and would recommend it as one for the collection…..Definitely a keeper as far as surf movies go!

Filled with beautiful original footage as well as open, honest, and sometimes emotional interviews, the movie successfully conveys the challenges that Shaun Tomson, Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Ian Cairns, Wayne “Rabbit”
Bartholomew, and Michael Tomson faced in their quest to bring surfing to a worldwide, professional level.
