Courtney and Woods Look the Goods at Newcastle

SOUTH BAR BEACH, Australia (Saturday, March 21, 2009) – 2009 ASP World Tour rookie Drew Courtney (Umina, NSW) remains the only Dream Tour surfer in contention to win the Mark Richards Pro Final, set down for tomorrow afternoon.

But it’s a different story at the Maitland Toyota Womens Open, where ASP Women’s World Tour pairing Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) and Rebecca Woods (Gold Coast) both remain in contention.

A three-time winner at Newcastle, Woods defeated Tasmanian Dara Penfold in a low-scoring affair.

Mulanovich easily out-classed Kirstie Jones and booked herself a match-up in tomorrow’s Semifinals against Kiwi Airini Mason.Surfers were again confronted with a disappointing lack of solid surf at Merewether, and organisers were forced to move the event back to South Bar Beach for the second day in succession.

With the swell at times offering little more than waves of halfmetre, surfers who managed to find the waves included South African Travis Logie (17.50), and the Aussie pairing comprised of former ASP World Tour surfer Jarrad Howse (16.25) and Drew Courtney (16.00).… Read the rest

Smith Sizzles as Owen Upsets on Dramatic Day at Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

BELLS BEACH, Victoria (Tuesday, April 7, 2009) – Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Snickers was completed today in three-to-four foot (1 metre) waves in the Bells Bowl, and the implementation of the new format, rendering the opening round an elimination man-on-man affair, saw surfers lifting their competitive game to survive a dramatic day of action.

Event No. 2 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is a pivotal point in the season and today’s action saw 16 of the world’s best surfers sent packing after just one heat. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Women’s Pipeline Pro. The Women’s Pipeline Pro has welcomed hundreds of women competitors throughout the years and is considered one of the ultimate women’s pro surf events.

Winds calmed and the waves were perfect. The rush was on! The wahines showed up stoked and ready to charge 4-6 feet solid Hawaiian waves.The quarterfinals of the bodyboarding division kicked off the 2nd day of competition. The 4 heats were choke full of talent, hungry girls who wanted to advance to the next round. Claudia Ferrari-Costa, Jessica Becker, Neymara Carvalho, and Lilly Pollard were the first place contenders from the four heats; Ferrari-Costa is the only Hawaii contender still standing.

The final heat of the bodyboarding division topped off a great day. With 1500 points up for grabs there was a lot at stake for the finalists.… Read the rest

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008) – The standard of surfing at the Boost Mobile Pro pres. by Hurley was nothing short of electrifying today, but per usual, it was eight-time ASP World Champion and ratings leader Kelly Slater (USA) who stole the show.
