PIPELINE, Hawaii (Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006) – In what was arguably the best finale ever seen at the 36-year-old Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters, Andy Irons (HAW) has claimed a well-deserved victory over long-time rival Kelly Slater (USA), Cory Lopez (USA) and Rob Machado (USA).

Putting on a totally courageous show in the two metre (six foot) plus conditions, the former three-time Foster’s ASP World Tour champion and defending event champion, put his body on the line and showed the world that when he puts his mind and his heart into his surfing he is a truly inspirational athlete.The final began with all surfers scoring some serious tube time but as per the classic event script, Slater had the early upper hand.

After all the talk about wildcards, it was Hawai’i’s ace that stole the show. Andy Irons solidified his reputation as Hawai’i’s best surfer of this generation by winning the prestigious Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters yesterday.

He did it in spectacular fashion, scoring a perfect 10 in the final to edge world champion Kelly Slater.

“I just never count myself out,” Irons said. “I know (Slater’s) an amazing surfer, but he’s out at the same spot I am, and the waves were coming.”

Irons also solidified his reputation as the surfer to beat in Hawai’i’s famous waves. In the process of winning yesterday’s contest, Irons clinched the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing championship.The Pipeline Masters was the third of three contests in the Triple Crown series.… Read the rest

North Narrabeen, Australia (Sun. Jan 7, 2007) – A jubilant Jordy Smith from South Africa has emerged from the water at Narrabeen Beach, Sydney, Australia a world champion today after claiming a win in junior surfing’s most prestigious event – the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.

Smith, a lanky naturalfooter from Durban made the most of everything that came his way throughout the day, and in the end held off a solid charge from 2003 winner and current Foster’s ASP World Tour number 20, Adriano de Souza in the 30-minute final.Starting off slow with few quality set waves pushing into the Narrabeen arena, both surfers had only minor scores locked in, but as the final progressed both opened up with some big moves and in the end it was a nail biting finish as Smith hung on to the lead till the final hooter with de Souza snapping at his heels.… Read the rest
