BIARRITZ, France (Saturday, July 8, 2006) American Schuyler McFerran (Encinitas, California) has won the Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboarding Championship presented by Evian after surfing from the first round and winning every one of the eight heats she contested.McFerran, 19, defeated fellow Californian Jennifer Smith (Pacific Beach) in the final which was held in clean, three foot (one metre waves) at Côte des Basques, Biarritz, France.

McFerran’s win has cemented her spot in the history books as the first-ever ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion. She won the US$4,500 first place prize in the US$30,000 event.

“I’m so thankful and stoked, happy and relieved – there’s just so many emotions. I’ve surfed so many heats that it’s just overwhelming, then to have all of my friends out here screaming and cheering for me, I just broke down,” an ecstatic McFerran said.… Read the rest

Although it’s wet and wild the swell has risen over night and Jeffreys Bay, South Africa is shooting through its typical long winding walls right down the point.

Former Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tourer now big-wave legend, Contest Director Mike Parsons had no hesitation in giving the nod to sending out the three heats of the Von Zipper Trials, beginning at 7.30am local time and following on he will assess conditions and determine whether to run round one of the main event – the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay.The area has been plagued by small waves over the past few days and competitors in the event have been eager for the famed righthander to come to life.… Read the rest

It was a day of upsets at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay today as numerous underdogs and local wildcards dominated the round one proceedings.

Insane surfing was the norm and conditions were an excellent 1.5 to two metres (five to six feet) and incredibly clean at the break known as “Supertubes” which sits right at the top of the unbelievably perfect Jeffreys Bay setup – and contestants were loving every minute of it.Adding spice to the mix was the fact that the top five seeds on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour, including Bobby Martinez (USA), Taj Burrow (AUS), Damien Hobgood (USA) and Andy Irons (HAW) were all relegated to round two after being well beaten by their lesser ranked rivals.… Read the rest

It was another huge day for the underdog today at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay with round two getting underway today in clean one metre (three foot) waves at the famed break known as “Supertubes”.

With the swell being somewhat inconsistent many of the biggest names in the sport found the going tough as the rookies and lesser-ranked competitors flourished.Finding themselves ousted from the event were none other than three-time Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour champion Andy Irons (HAW), his brother Bruce Irons (HAW), currently third ranked Bobby Martinez (USA), 2001 world champion CJ Hobgood and 2005 ASP Rookie Of The Year Fred Patacchia (HAW).

Finding the big scores needed to claim wins were rookies Roy Powers (HAW (defeated Andy Irons), Jarrad Howse (AUS) (defeated Martinez), David Weare (ZAF) (defeated Bruce Irons), Mikael Picon (FRA) (defeated CJ Hobgood) and Pancho Sullivan (defeated Patacchia).… Read the rest
