Greg Long, Grant Baker, Derek Dunfee are winners in 2009 Billabong XXL Awards
The gladiators of big wave surfing took center stage in California last night for the ninth annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.

Regarded as the Oscars of big wave surfing, the XXL awards recognize the biggest and ugliest waves ridden over the past twelve months as judged by a global panel of 250 surf industry, former pros and big wave specialists. Over 2000 people packed the Grove Theatre in Anaheim to witness mind-blowing rides from Chile, Europe, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, California and French Polynesia.

Californian big wave surfer Greg Long, 26, took top honors at the gala ceremony and was handed $50,000 for winning the Ride Of The Year Category. Gabriel Villaran nominated for the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards

Peruvian Gabriel Villaran was nominated for the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. Villaran surfed a huge 20 feet plus wave at El Buey, Northern Chile, on June 20th. Nine months later, he received the great news that he was one of the five surfers selected to compete for a $15,000 prize.2006 Pan American Surfing Champion, 2006 Monster Energy Pipeline Pro finalist and 2005 Latin American Surfing Champion, Villaran, is regarded as one of Latin America best all around surfers. He can easily fly at one foot beach breaks, ride Pipeline with great style or drop huge Waimea bombs.
