Bodyboarding is one of the most explosive underground sports in the world today. Kaua’i’s Hubbard rides Pipeline to world title

Kaua’i has another wave-riding world champion.

In the ultimate performance for bodyboarding, Jeff Hubbard of Lihu’e won the Rockstar Games Pipeline Pro and clinched the International Bodyboarding Association world championship in the process yesterday.

“It’s up there with getting married and being born,” said Hubbard, 31.The final day of the contest was completed in spectacular barreling waves of 6 to 10 feet yesterday at the Banzai Pipeline. The Pipeline Pro is the final event of the 2006-07 world tour, and considered the most prestigious contest in the sport.

“I knew if I could win this, there would be no question that I would be the world champ, and I deserved it,” Hubbard said.

Hubbard is the fourth Hawai’i competitor ever to win the bodyboarding world championship, and the first since Mike Stewart of Kailua, Kona, won the last of his record nine championships in 1995.… Read the rest

Ian Kruger (CT) earned himself the nickname of the “quiet assassin” for his stealthy tactics of sitting alone away from the pack picking off perfect waves which he annihilated to win the SABA Wedge Classic.Kruger’s victory in the Pro division of the 5A rated Plettenberg Bay event will boost his position on the SABA ratings. The Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge Western Australian Ryan Hardy wins $20,000

Western Australian Ryan Hardy pulled off one of the most dramatic wins in the history of the CSIC. An incredible day of bodyboarding went down to the wire with Hardy taking out the first prize cheque of $20,000 in the 10th annual Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge held in near perfect 6 – 8ft waves. Hardy was on fire all day and was a well-deserved winner.

The last day was held in unbelievable 4 – 8 ft conditions. One of the best days ever seen for the CSIC. Riders and officials were put on hold until the last minute by contest organiser Mark Fordham until conditions became more that favourable.Conditions… Read the rest
