Adriano De Souza Wins Billabong Rio Pro, Leads ASP World Title Race

BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Friday, May 20, 2011) – Adriano de Souza (BRA), 24, has won the Billabong Rio Pro over Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, in tricky two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Barra Da Tijuca and the win catapults the Brazilian atop the ASP World Title Rankings.

The Billabong Rio Pro, stop No. 3 of 11 on the men’s ASP World Title Series, saw the world’s best surfers tackle a variety of conditions after a week of lay days and ran at both the lefthander of Arpoador and the tricky beachbreak of Barra Da Tijuca over four consecutive days to decide the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro winner.De Souza, who was a standout throughout the Billabong Rio Pro, won several close heats on the final day of competition before scalping a commanding victory over Burrow with the support of a massive Brazilian crowd behind him.… Read the rest

ARUGAM BAY, Sri Lanka (Sunday, September 4, 2011) – Duane Dusoto (HAW) reigning ASP World Longboard Champion maintains his world number one ranking after taking out today’s SriLankan Airlines Pro final over Taylor Jensen (USA). The pair battled for the title in clean 4 to 5 foot (2 meter) surf at Arugam Bay point.

“I’m on top of the world baby!” Dusoto said. “This is a dream come true, this is what we work so hard for. The waves here have been amazing, it’s never been flat and we had the best surf in the final, it was perfect. Another great legend of the early longboard days of the glorious sixties era of surfing in Australia has passed away.

Sad news this week beginning to filter in as we learned that sixties and seventies reclusive stylist, Russell Hughes, has ridden his final wave.

After several battles with Cancer over the years, Russell aged 64, passed away this past week in Quebec, Canada, the home country of his surviving long time French Canadian partner, Monik Roy.

Originally from Brisbane in Queensland, Russell started his involvement with surfing and love of the ocean with the Surfers Paradise Surf Lifesaving Club.
