Riders vote unanimously to extend the waiting period for the 2009 Nomad Shark Island Challenge

After long talks with riders and officials; it has been decided to extend the waiting period for the 2009 Nomad Shark Island challenge for an additional 2 weeks to accommodate the end of the second tidal window and inturn to introduce of a third. The waiting period will now carry on till the 9th of August, a total of 34 days, the third longest waiting period in the event history.

“It has been a shocking period for swell” explains Contest Director Mark Fordham. “There has been plenty of activity down South though the swells seem to keep tracking in an S/SW direction which is unfavourable for Shark Island itself.… Read the rest

PASTA POINT, Maldives (Sunday, June 14, 2009) – Owen Wright (Australia) has won the 10th annual Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME SriLankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives.

It was a monumental, high-scoring Final, described by numerous ASP officials at this event as the greatest Final they have ever seen.

This Final had everything with both surfers forcing each other to new heights, combining superb power surfing with new age aerial moves.

The final scores saw Owen Wright on 19.23 out of a possible 20 to Gudauskas on 18.93.Wright’s second ride in the final of 9.83 was decisive, pulling two major aerial manuevers along with a series of fully-powered on-face vertical turns.

While that wave opened up a serious lead, Gudauskas challenged hard on his second ride, driving through a series of powerful top-to-bottom turns, but just fractionally mistimed his final floating re entry and fell.… Read the rest

BOLIVAR WILL SURF!

The Bolivarian Sports Organization (ODEBO, Organizacion Deportiva Bolivariana), organizer of the Bolivarian Games, the regional multi-sport event held in honor of Simón Bolívar, announced it will include surfing as an official sport in the 17th Edition of the Games.

Scheduled for September 12 – 14, 2009, a highlight of the Bolivarian Games is the fact that it will be happening simultaneously in three countries. The center of the Games will be held in Sucre, Bolivia, with additional sporting events being held in Peru.The waves of La FAE beach in Salinas, Ecuador, home of the 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship were selected to host the international surfing event. Participating countries will include Colombia, Panama, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela.

ODEBO is an International Sports Organization in Latin America. Each surfer competing in the event will do so as a part of their National team under the organization of their respective National Olympic Committee.… Read the rest
