[/i]16 Australian and New Zealand girls battled for the title in fun 2-3ft wedgy waves at the Breakwall on Town Beach. The weather was beautiful, the vibe was great, and the girls were RIPPING! The level of girls surfing has really picked up, every heat was close.

Even the younger girls were ! really pushing the limits. Grommets -Paige Gregory, Laura Verjbitsky, Lauren Williams, Bree Iskov, and Junior women’s Australian title winner, 15 year old Kaitlin Murphy, entered the event and put up a good fight against the more experienced girls.

In her first heat, local girl, Brooke Smith blew all the other girls out of the water, picking off the sets and doing some great spin/roll combinations.

Ulladulla’s Emma Cobb was doing some incredibly stylish and fast reverses. After watching her semi final, Andrew Lester asked Emma to surf in his next heat for him…

Sylve Colless executed some perfect looking spins, she managed to do six spins on one wave in her heat. Sylve looked a little dizzy afterwards…. Or maybe that was because of her pash with Ian Thorpe on her birthday, two weeks earlier….

Emma Roby was surfi! ng better than ever. After a big year of charging various reefs around oz, and placing runner up in the Australian titles, Emma was surfing great. Unfortunately she couldn’t continue her form to make this final.

Lauren Knowles competed with an injured back, but still managed to bust some solid spin/roll combos on the sets.

It was great to have the New Zealand girls over for the event too. Poppy Chapman tied her baby up on the beach before putting in a great effort in her heat. World traveller, and newly crowned WWT amateur champion, Mihi Wells was surfing great, picking off some fun looking rights breaking into the wall.

I have to say, throughout the whole week of Nationals and the Human Pro, Mihi Wells and her man, Danny were the keenest and coolest people on the beach! They were at the contest, all day, every day, supporting thei! r team riders and all the Aussies! It was great.

The final: Kira Lewellyn, Mandy Zieren, Nicole Fleming, and Lilly Pollard.

The underdog, “Tassie Devil” -Nicole Fleming from Tasmania, scored a nice barrel to double spin in her semi to throw her into the final, and did her little state proud. Nicole surfed well all contest, but couldn’t get any decent sets in the final.

Kira and Mandy were strong favourites to win, each girl winning both their quarter and semi final heats..

In the final, Mandy scored a couple of nice set waves to do some combinations on, while Kira busted out with a reverse off the lip and another long wave.

I basically didn’t have much, except for one good combo wave. Kira had the final in the bag, the sets stopped, and noone got a wave for the last few minutes, until the last 5 seconds, wh! en a wedge popped up next to the breakwall. I managed to scrape into it and score a deep little barrel, I came out just as the hooter went. Talk about lucky…

Final Results:
1st -Lilly Pollard $1200US
2nd -Kira Llewellyn $750US
3rd -Mandy Zieren $600US
4th -Nicole Fleming $450US

The presentation night was great fun! There were smiles on everyones faces.

Kira Lewellyn was crowned 2005 Women’s World Tour Champion. Kira dominated the tour, winning 4 events and making 6 finals. To celebrate, Kira got all her fellow queenslanders up on stage, and they all got rowdy!

Mihi Wells was crowned 2005 Women’s World Tour Amateur Champion, and the kiwis performed a haka dance in her honour.

Big thankyou’s must go out to the organisers and judges! of the WWT event.
