COOLANGATTA, Australia (Wednesday, June 6, 2007) \u0096 Current Foster\u0092s ASP World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS) won the inaugural Rip Curl Pro Search held in Reunion Island in 2005, yet came up short when the Search stopped in Mexico late last June.Having finished in the quarterfinals or better in each of the nine Foster\u0092s ASP World Tour events since, the lightning-fast Fanning is a heavy favorite to claim another Search \u0091Globe\u0092 trophy heading into the 2007 Rip Curl Pro Search Chile.<\/p>\n
\u0093Things have been going well for a while now and I would love to get another Globe, but for me I just want to keep a high level of performance up,\u0094 Fanning said. \u0093I\u0092m not as concerned about the results as I am to just have fun and surf at the best of my ability.\u0094<\/p>\n
The Rip Curl Pro Search Chile is Stop No. 4 of 10 on the 2007 Foster\u0092s ASP World Tour and the first ASP event to be held in Chile. Boasting a one-of-a-kind floating license that enables the event to set up shop at a different world-class wave each year, the third-annual Rip Curl \u0091Search\u0092 will next head to the Northern Chilean village of Arica from June 20-July 1, 2007.<\/p>\n
Located just south of Peru in South America, the city of Arica is home to a wave known as \u0093El Gringo\u0094, although unanimously considered the \u0093Chilean Pipeline.\u0094\tThe right and left-hand reef break spits out thick, cold-water barrels over shallow reef and rock and is situated just off of Ex-Isla Alacran or \u0091Scorpion Island\u0092 \u0096 a rock cropping 1 mile off the coast. The South Pacific water temperature off the Chilean coast is a chilly 61 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius) this time of year \u0096 a far cry from the warm waters of Tahiti which hosted the Top 45 last. <\/p>\n
\u0093I think that the Search brings something fresh to the tour,\u0094 Fanning said. \u0093Everyone is on the same level at venues they know nothing about and I think everyone gets excited about going to new places.\u0094<\/p>\n
The elite Foster\u0092s ASP World Tour competitors will be joined by a lethal wildcard contingent consisting of two Rip Curl team riders and one Chilean trialist as they all battle it out to determine who will be crowned \u0091King of the Island\u0092 at the 2007 Rip Curl Pro Search Chile.<\/p>\n
Former Foster\u0092s 45 campaigner Kieren Perrow (AUS), deadly tube maestro Bruno Santos (BRA) and former ASP World Junior Champion Kekoa Bacalso (HAW) will square off in a one-heat battle royale for the two team spots, while the Chilean trialist will be chosen via an 8 to 16-man trials that will take place at \u0093El Gringo\u0094 on June 19, 2007.<\/p>\n
