{"id":13728,"date":"2019-02-18T11:48:07","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T04:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saltwater-dreaming.com\/joy-monahan-to-defend-asp-longboard-title-at-roxy-jam-biarritz\/"},"modified":"2019-02-18T11:48:07","modified_gmt":"2019-02-18T04:48:07","slug":"joy-monahan-to-defend-asp-longboard-title-at-roxy-jam-biarritz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saltwater-dreaming.com\/news\/2019\/02\/18\/joy-monahan-to-defend-asp-longboard-title-at-roxy-jam-biarritz\/","title":{"rendered":"Joy Monahan to Defend ASP Longboard Title at Roxy Jam Biarritz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Roxy ASP Women\u00c2\u2019s World Longboard Championships (WWLC)<br \/>\nASP Women\u00c2\u2019s World Longboard Title Decider<br \/>\nLa C\u00c3\u00b4te des Basques, Biarritz \u00c2\u2013 France<br \/>\nJuly 10-14, 2009 <\/p>\n<p>Joy Monahan to Defend ASP Longboard Title at Roxy Jam Biarritz <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saltwater-dreaming.com\/news\/uploads\/3a9345b1-3d9f-0bb9.jpg\"><br \/>\nImage from www.roxyjam.com<\/p>\n<p>COOLANGATTA, Australia (Thursday, July 2, 2009) \u00c2\u2013 Reigning ASP Women\u00c2\u2019s World<br \/>\nLongboard Champion Joy Monahan (Oahu, HAW), 23, will defend her title at the<br \/>\nupcoming fourth edition of the Roxy ASP Women\u00c2\u2019s World Longboard Championships<br \/>\n(WWLC), from July 10 to 14, 2009, at La C\u00c3\u00b4te des Basques in Biarritz, France. <\/p>\n<p>Monahan, whose first crown came with a surprise after she defeated several favorites<br \/>\nincluding 2007 ASP Women\u00c2\u2019s World Longboard champion Jennifer Smith (California,<br \/>\nUSA) en route to winning her first ASP World title, will wear the favorite\u00c2\u2019s suit<br \/>\nwhen she takes on the world\u00c2\u2019s best longboarding female surfers in Biarritz for a<br \/>\ntry at a second consecutive crown.\u00c2\u201cI am very excited coming back to Biarritz as the defending champion,\u00c2\u201d Monahan<br \/>\nsaid. \u00c2\u201cI feel a little pressure but only from myself as I want to surf at my very<br \/>\nbest.\u00c2\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Monahan, whose quest will be tougher than ever as women\u00c2\u2019s longboarding is improving<br \/>\nyear after year towards excellency, knows how much her opponents and other favorites<br \/>\nwill be eager to grab their peace of glory when they paddle out in the expected good<br \/>\nconditions in less than two weeks, knowing the Roxy Jam is the only chance of the<br \/>\nyear to take the prestigious trophy home. <\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u201cEvery girl who qualifies for this event is a threat,\u00c2\u201d Monahan said. \u00c2\u201cThe caliber<br \/>\nof women\u00c2\u2019s longboarding is just phenomenal. Each year I have participated in the<br \/>\nevent, the talent level has increased! I think each region has their favorite but I<br \/>\nlook forward to surfing with everyone, because I know each person I surf against<br \/>\nwill help me push my own surfing.\u00c2\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a change of format for this year\u00c2\u2019s edition and 32 elite surfers only having a<br \/>\nchance at the ASP Women\u00c2\u2019s World Longboard title, the battle promises to be tougher<br \/>\nthan ever, Monahan\u00c2\u2019s most serious threats coming from usual finals\u00c2\u2019 contenders<br \/>\nKassia Meador (California, USA), 27, last year\u00c2\u2019s World No. 5, and Jennifer Smith<br \/>\n(California, USA), 23, event runner-up in 2006, event champion in 2007 and World No.<br \/>\n3 last year, the most consistent surfer of the event by far.  <\/p>\n<p>Monahan, who went from the position of outsider to the event\u00c2\u2019s top seed in a<br \/>\nyear-time, will be looking to keep the crown on Oahu Island, the place she was born<br \/>\nand where her performance reminded how much longboarding is recognized in Hawaii. <\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u201cSurfing originated in Hawaii and to be able to bring the title back home was<br \/>\nsomething very special to me,\u00c2\u201d Monahan said. \u00c2\u201cThis has been a goal of mine since I<br \/>\nwas 13 years old and to finally accomplish it really meant a lot.
