In excellent long-winding Snapper Rocks waves the favourites of the Quiksilver Pro presented by Samsung really stepped up to the plate to shine in their respective heats in the opening round of the first event on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour.

Seven-time world champion Kelly Slater (USA), three-time world champion Andy Irons (HAW) and current world number three and defending event champion Mick Fanning (AUS) all locked in tremendous performances to open their accounts and notched up some extremely high scores.Slater, in his heat against wildcard Jeremy Flores (REU) and Tom Whitaker (AUS), started slow and in the opening stages Flores looked as though he was going to cause an upset.… Read the rest

The first day of the Roxy Pro saw the 2006 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour kick off with a bang, or more specifically, a crash here at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast of Australia.

Event favorites Chelsea Georgeson (AUS) and Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), who are the reigning ASP world champion and Roxy Pro champion respectively, accidentally collided at the end of their highly anticipated heat three clash.”There wasn’t much time left and I had been falling off on all the other waves so I was just waiting for that one good one,” said Georgeson who swapped spots on the leader board with Gilmore several times throughout the 30-minute heat, but ultimately came out on top.… Read the rest

Torrential rains and gale force gusts are toppling trees on Australia’s Gold Coast this morning.

Also felled are any plans to resume action on the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro events presented by Samsung, the first events on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour and ASP Women’s World Tour.

Three metre (10 to 12 foot) plus and highly unruly surf has pounded Snapper Rocks for the past couple of days, but according to Ben Matson, from Swellnet.com.au, the low pressure system responsible for these conditions is expected to slowly move away from the coastline with an improvement in weather expected starting tomorrow.”Large… Read the rest

Nine-year ASP Women’s World Tour veteran Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS) has defeated six-time world champion Layne Beachley (AUS) to win the first event of the year, the Roxy Pro.[/i]“I didn’t smash Layne as much as I would have liked to, but I ended up winning,” Redmann-Carr said of their final held in three to four foot waves at Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast of Australia this afternoon.

This marks Redman-Carr’s first victory since the Roxy Pro in Fiji in 2002. The Western Australian, who finished runner-up to Beachley in 2001, came into this contest seeded third. She leaves the event rated number one in the world, ahead of reigning world champ Chelsea Georgeson (AUS) and the rest of the “new generation” of up-and-coming talent.… Read the rest

Kelly Slater (USA), the man considered the greatest surfer of all time, has lived up to expectation once again by winning the first event of the 2006 Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour, the Quiksilver Pro presented by Samsung, which climaxed in ultra clean one metre (three foot) waves at Duranbah beach on the southern end of Queensland’s Gold Coast today.Against Australian surfing icon Taj Burrow (AUS), Slater, the seven-time world champion was back to his absolute best, and the 34-year-old wasted no time in securing a lead in the 30 minute final.

Thousands of fans cheered on as their surfing heroes went wave for wave, with both Burrow and Slater pulling out all the stops as they vied for the US$30,000 first place winners’ cheque and the all important ratings lead in the chase for the 2006 world surfing title.… Read the rest
