All Club Members and interested visitors are invited to kick off the monsoon season during the 2 day event to be held at Kalim reef on the south end of Patong Bay. This year’s contest will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 16-17.

Kalim surf contest

The second annual Phuket Boardriders Kalim Beach Surf Competition will be held on August 5th and 6th at Kalim reef on the north end of Patong Bay. Up to 48 local and visiting surfers will take part in the event with prizes being awarded to the top 4 finishers.The contest will kick off at 9am on Saturday and run through the weekend. Other than surfing, the event will include a car audio demonstration by Sapam Auto Sound as well as two live bands performing on Sunday evening after the prize giving ceremony.

PHUKET SURFERS TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE LOST IN 26 DECEMBER TSUNAMI

[i]Phuket’s surfing community will honour the victims of last years Tsunami caused by a 9.0 earthquake near Sumatra which devastated southern Thailand on Dec. 26, 2004, with a “paddle out”.

As most of the club members live or at least spend a good deal of time on or near the beach, the ceremony will be especially poignant as they
themselves lost family, friends, and livelihoods to the Tsunami.

During the ceremony, participating surfers will paddle their boards
offshore and join hands to form a large floating circle. Following
tradition, they will sprinkle flowers into the sea and observe a minute’s
silence in memory of those that perished.

Phuket Boardriders Club, said the gesture is a tradition for surfers honouring one of their own, but this circle will go further than that to reflect the Thai and expatriate surfers’ bond to the island and more importantly to it’s people.[/i]Though… Read the rest

In ceremonies held on December 26 2005 at Patong beach and Kamala beach, Phuket’s surfing community honoured the victims of last years Tsunami caused by a 9.0 earthquake near Sumatra which devastated southern Thailand on Dec. 26, 2004, with a “paddle out” to form a “surfers circle” with a minute’s silence in the water and casting of flowers into the ocean.[/i]The circle and strong emotions that went with it only helped in strengthening bonds between surfers on the island.

Though traditionally a way to mourn the loss of a fellow surfer, Phuket surfers felt that a surfer’s circle was the most appropriate way for them to pay their respects to those who were lost to the sea’s wrath one year ago.
