For some years now, the bad mood among surfers in the Chinese island has been largely reported.

Several incidents recently involved expatriates surfers and classes of Chinese kids and their surf instructors. The province authority decided to react after the agression of an instructor at Shimei by five expatriates who call themselves ‘locals’.During that incident, the man was insulted, then physically attacked. ‘I was the target but i was also responsible for the ten kids who were with me for a lesson. That’s why i decided to fight back and put an end to the escalation’, he said to a local news channel.

Using his martial arts skills he knocked down three agressors, broke the arm of one and immobilized the fifth until police arrival. The Hainan Tourism Board then hired the twelve local surf businesses and three consultants from the Maldives to define tourism rules and long-term local development plans.… Read the rest

JOSH CONSTABLE WINS ASP WORLD LONGBOARD TITLE

ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS (ASP) MEN’S WORLD LONGBOARDING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Josh Constable (AUS) has won the 2006 ASP Men’s World Longboard Title today, defeating Ned Snow from Hawaii in a very closely contested man-on-man final at the 13th Annual Rabbit Kekai International Longboard Classic held in Costa Rica.Constable, who contested every heat from the first round of the hotly contested event, notched up some of highest total wave scores of the event and was elated with his victory.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” said Constable. “When I get home with family and friends it will probably kick in. Right now it just doesn’t seem real. It was a perfect day!”

Speaking about the event itself he was full of praise for the venue and the organizers.
“It was such a great atmosphere with everyone staying together and surfing perfect lefts early in the event at the Boca,” said Constable.… Read the rest

BIARRITZ, France (Monday, July 3, 2006) – The first two rounds of the Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboard Championship (WWLC) presented by Evian ran in half to one meter (two to three foot) waves at Côte des Basques, Biarritz, on France’s southwest coast today.Preliminary rounds of the inaugural event whittled the field of 60-plus surfers to 48, with today’s winners joining the seeded surfers in round three.

Contest director Marc Sarran will assess the swell, tide and wind daily to capitalize on the best conditions available during the remaining six-day competition window, with three days needed to complete the event due to radical tidal differences.

BIARRITZ, France (Saturday, July 8, 2006) American Schuyler McFerran (Encinitas, California) has won the Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboarding Championship presented by Evian after surfing from the first round and winning every one of the eight heats she contested.McFerran, 19, defeated fellow Californian Jennifer Smith (Pacific Beach) in the final which was held in clean, three foot (one metre waves) at Côte des Basques, Biarritz, France.

McFerran’s win has cemented her spot in the history books as the first-ever ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion. She won the US$4,500 first place prize in the US$30,000 event.

“I’m so thankful and stoked, happy and relieved – there’s just so many emotions. I’ve surfed so many heats that it’s just overwhelming, then to have all of my friends out here screaming and cheering for me, I just broke down,” an ecstatic McFerran said.… Read the rest
