(Merewether, NSW, Australia, 22 March, 2009)

MEREWETHER local Philippa Anderson has become the first ever local surfer to win a final at Newcastle’s 24th annual Surfest competition.

The 17-year-old smashed a 23-year hoodoo that has never seen a local surfer win a main event at Newcastle when she edged out Sunshine Coast surfer Dimity Stoyle (Maroochydore) by less than one-and-a-half points.

In clean, one-metre waves at Merewether beach, the St Phillips Waratah High School student racked up a heat score of 15.10 to Stoyle’s 13.85 to have her name etched on the Maitland Toyota Open trophy.Anderson, who came through the junior ranks of the Hunter Water Stars of the Future program at the Newcastle contest, will soon use her $US2500 prize money to buy a car.

And while she is yet to earn her P plates that will allow her to drive unaccompanied, she proved to the massive crowd of more than 5000 that she is no learner in the water.… Read the rest

ISA launches the World Stand Up Paddle Surfing Championship

3 June 2009 – The International Surfing Association (ISA), World Governing Authority for Surfing and all its disciplines, recognized by the International Olympic Committee, is proud to announce the creation of the first ISA World Stand Up Paddle Surfing Championship in history.

Stand Up Paddle Surfing (SUP) is one of the surfing disciplines that has grown in recent years. Known in Hawaiian as Ku Hoe He’e Nalu, it is considered by many as a “new” way of surfing, but its history actually started long before in Hawaii where the Waikiki Beach Boys used to surf with outrigger paddles. They also used SUP to take pictures of the tourists that were learning to surf.By early 2000, Hawaiian surfers, including Dave Kalama, Brian Keualana, Rick Thomas, Archie Kalepa and Laird Hamilton, brought the discipline back to life.… Read the rest

Gilmore Wins Roxy Pro Gold Coast, Takes ASP Women’s World Tour Lead

SNAPPER ROCKS, Australia (Sunday, March 8, 2009) – Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion, has won the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by LG Mobile, defeating Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, in the Final to claim the inaugural event on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour.

Gilmore wasted no time in the Final, securing the day’s high single-wave score of a 9.57 out of a possible 10 on her opening wave for a fluid series of fin releases and power carves.“It was a really little wave,” Gilmore said. “I had a few flashbacks from 2005 where I was trying to pick off the little ones that were going to grow down the line. Courtney and Woods Look the Goods at Newcastle

Courtney and Woods Look the Goods at Newcastle

SOUTH BAR BEACH, Australia (Saturday, March 21, 2009) – 2009 ASP World Tour rookie Drew Courtney (Umina, NSW) remains the only Dream Tour surfer in contention to win the Mark Richards Pro Final, set down for tomorrow afternoon.

But it’s a different story at the Maitland Toyota Womens Open, where ASP Women’s World Tour pairing Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) and Rebecca Woods (Gold Coast) both remain in contention.

A three-time winner at Newcastle, Woods defeated Tasmanian Dara Penfold in a low-scoring affair.

Mulanovich easily out-classed Kirstie Jones and booked herself a match-up in tomorrow’s Semifinals against Kiwi Airini Mason.Surfers were again confronted with a disappointing lack of solid surf at Merewether, and organisers were forced to move the event back to South Bar Beach for the second day in succession.

With the swell at times offering little more than waves of halfmetre, surfers who managed to find the waves included South African Travis Logie (17.50), and the Aussie pairing comprised of former ASP World Tour surfer Jarrad Howse (16.25) and Drew Courtney (16.00).… Read the rest
