TEAHUPOO, Tahiti (Wednesday, May 16th, 2007) – Damien Hobgood (USA) has been crowned the 2007 Billabong Pro Tahiti Champion after beating Foster’s ASP World Tour ratings leader Mick Fanning (AUS) in a last-minute victory in 5 to 7 foot (1.5 – 2 metre) surf at Teahupoo.

Hobgood bowed out of the 2005 Billabong Pro Tahiti Final halfway through after dislocating his shoulder – a circumstance which made his win today that much more meaningful.“It’s insane – I was stoked to have another chance at it,” Hobgood said. “I feel that things happen for a reason and I did my best out here in 2005 and came up short. I replayed that wave in my mind a hundred times going, ‘I should have tried to stay in that barrel and not come out doggy-door,’ but I feel like I can put that out of my mind now.”… Read the rest

“Bodyboarders mindelenses unidos, jamais serão vencidos”

Bodyboarders from Cabo Verde, São Vicente Island, working as volunteers will be organizing an independent Bodyboard contest in April at Praia Grande. The event is not going to be sanctioned by the National Governing Body, the Skibosurf Surf Club, but the initiative is totally supported by the Club.With the note “Bodyboarders mindelenses unidos, jamais serão vencidos –Mindelenses Bodyborders united will never be defeated-”, the group of bodyboarders decided to hold the contest in order to keep working for the sport of the island.

According to Jorge Freitas, Director of Skibosurf, “Is a great initiative, this spontaneous contest because in the present we don’t have much time to make everything involved in getting a contest done because of our jobs and responsibilities”.

BELLS BEACH, Australia (Tuesday, Apr. 3, 2007) –Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro presented by Snickers saw proven Bells Beach performers dominate proceedings in the four to six foot (one to one half metre) and slightly onshore conditions on offer today.

Former champions and perennial Top 5 Foster’s ASP World Tour surfers Kelly Slater (USA), Andy Irons (HAW), Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Mick Fanning (AUS) made their way through the opening round of the event with ease and will advance straight to Round 3.Slater and Parkinson, both of whom made the Rip Curl Pro final last year, tied for the day’s highest single wave score: 9.17 out of 10.00. Gilmore’s trouncing of defending Rip Curl Pro and 2004 World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER) in the Final has catapulted her to equal World No. 1 for the first time in her career.
