Favorites Steal the Show at Oxbow WLT, Champion To Be Crowned Tomorrow

ANGLET, Les Dunes, France (Saturday, May 10, 2008) – The Oxbow WLT pres. by Orange got closer to its business end today and the 2008 Oxbow WLT Champion will be crowned tomorrow. The pressure rose at Les Dunes, back up venue South to the main event site of Les Cavaliers, and favorites took the best of the three foot (one meter) waves on offer to secure a spot in the finals. From the sixteen men who surfed in Round 4 today, eight only remain in the race for the title.Matthew Moir (Cape Town, ZAF), 30, posted the best ride of the day on his way to defeat best scorer of the Oxbow WLT Taylor Jensen (USA) in Heat 3. Moir, who surfed with great speed and comitment, secured an excellent 9.35 point ride and finished with a 16.85 point heat score (out of a possible 20) to take the win and advance through to the quarterfinals.… Read the rest

China ‘s tidal bore, known as the Silver Dragon is the greatest on the planet with 8.9 meters tidal range max.
After 1988’s debatable success to ride the bore (UK Stuart Matthews rode the bore for 11 sec’ in the whitewater), a team of French, Brazilian and Italian riders managed to ride several waves at different locations on the Qiantang river, about 2hours from Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.

PHUKET: Twelve top international models will be in Phuket next week to shoot Phuket Calendar 2008 in a bid to raise the island’s image as an exotic holiday destination.The calendar, to be produced at a cost of 5 million baht by Elite Model Management South East Asia, will feature 12 sexy models in swimsuits, batik and casual wear at a variety of locations around the island.

Woranoot Kunopakanphun, manager of Elite Model Management South East Asia, told the Gazette that the theme of the calendar will be “Paradise in Phuket”, with the Phuket Gazette as local media sponsor.

A production team of about 30 people, including the models themselves, will begin the five-day series of shoots from November 14.… Read the rest

ANTHONY ‘YEP’ COLAS IN THAILAND


Thailand gulf, location not disclosed

To tell you the truth, I did not go to Thailand to surf. My girlfriend convinced me that it’s one of the most beautiful country on earth blessed by the most tolerant people, “Same same but different” being their hospitality baseline. During last X-mas, I had just negotiated a 2 day escape to check a completely ignored coastline in the Gulf of Thailand. But that was out of Phi-Phi island, in the Andaman Sea, only 1h30 from Phuket by ferry boat but a long way from my target area. Since Mike Kew and Chris Burkhard surftrip last September, we’ve seen some serious surf on the west shores of Thailand N°1 tourist area.

Phuket waves are usually fueled by the strong SW monsoon fetch in the Andaman Sea. From May to September, there is some decent surf to be tapped on the western coasts, the conditions obviously getting better as you head north towards the border with Myanmar.… Read the rest
