Here’s the plan for the Shark Island Challenge ’09
Monday, 20 July 2009 18:01

Straight from Mr. Mark Fordham himself:
Another swell that has failed to deliver – you would think that 4 hrs of 4-6ft swell would be achievable in 27 days, but hey, as the old saying goes – it’s not over till the fat lady sings. The last time this happen was in 1999 when Rissole took the crown after the completion of one round.Yes, it has been frustrating. Unfortunately, the waves did not reach the required minimum 4ft range on the weekend and from all accounts everyone was in favour not to stage the 2nd round. I’m happy that everyone is on the same wave length. For us to hold the final round in smaller, less favourable, conditions would be a huge step backwards. By setting a bench mark it shows the general public ( the fans) and, if it matters, the IBA, that all involved are committed to surfing waves that best represents our sport.
In regards to the final week, I’ll be assessing what this next swell will be doing and what the future forecasts are predicting towards the middle of the week. There is a swell predicted for Friday which should run into the weekend, but as you all know this could change. At this stage we will be on call for this Friday onwards. If the waves are sufficient during this swell period we will proceed with round two.
By Thursday, if the forecast for Friday onwards is reading less than favourable conditions and if there is no promised swells are on the horizon we will hold the presentation on the Saturday night with the results obtained from the first round.
Anyways – I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every rider and official for their total commitment for this years event – especially the international and interstate riders. It is your attitude and professionalism that has really inspired me to ensure that this event keeps its history and its true name sake.
