4th ANNUAL KALIM SURFING CONTEST 2008

the 4th annual Kalim Surfing Contest to be held at Kalim Beach on July 18 � 20, 2008.
In its 4th year, this annual contest aims to promote the sport of surfing to the general public, to encourage sustainable tourism to the island of Phuket (particularly during the low season), to raise the level of surfing amongst the Thai community, and to perpetuate education and ocean safety awareness.The contest has grown in size and interest every year and continues to draw participants from around Thailand and the world, including the United States (and Hawaii), Europe, Australia, South Africa, and our Asian neighbors from Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
The event will feature 3 divisions: the open shortboard division, the longboard division (for boards over 8 feet in length), and the grom division for competitors 14 years of age and under.
Having gained popularity over the years, the Kalim Surf Contest appears on the calendars of surfing-related websites around the world. In addition to staging several competitions each surf season, the Boardriders have actively participated in such charitable activities as beach cleanups, tsunami aid, and youth sponsorships.
This year�s Kalim contest promises to be the best ever, with several big name sponsors and government supported, strong community backing, and of course, the renowned and entertaining awards party.
Competitors, supporters, and spectators are encouraged to come out and support the event.
Goals of the Contest
To encourage the people of Phuket and the community of Kalim to participate in the sport of surfing for health and fitness, as well as discouraging the use of drugs amongst Thai people, especially our youth.
To promote sustainable tourism to the island of Phuket, particularly during the low season.
� To introduce surfing to the Thai public at large and encourage interest in the sport and ocean safety.
To raise the standard of Thai surfing and lifesaving to an international level.
Date and Time
July 18-20 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) � subject to suitable surf and weather conditions.
Competition Details*
Open Division � Maximum of 64 competitors in 16 first-round heats. Competitors must use a shortboard shape no longer than 7 feet long. The Open Division heats will span all 3 days of the contest.
Grom (youth) Division � Maximum of 16 competitors in 4 first round heats. Competitors must be 14 years of age or younger and may use any kind of surfboard. The Grom Division heats will be held for 2 days on Saturday and Sunday.
Longboard Division � Maximum of 24 competitors in 6 first round heats. Competitors must use surfboards longer than 8 feet with a longboard shape. The Longboard Division will span all 3 days of the contest.
* Note: contest and heat times are subject to change by the organizers in order to take advantage of prevailing weather, surf, and tide conditions.
การแข่งขันกระดานโต้คลื่น หาดกะหลิม ครั้งที่ 4
เนื่องด้วยชมรมนักโต้คลื่นภูเก็ต ร่วมกับเทศบาลเมืองป่าตอง และชุมชนบ้านกะหลิม ได้มีความประสงค์จะจัดการแข่งขันกระดานโต้คลื่น ณ บริเวณชายหาดบ้านกะหลิม (Kalim Surfing Contest 2008) ขึ้นในวันที่ 18 � 20 กรกฎาคม 2008 นี้ ซึ่งจุดประสงค์หลักคือ ส่งเสริมกีฬาโต้คลื่นแก่เยาวชน และบุคคลที่สนใจ รวมไปถึงเพื่อส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวของ จังหวัดภูเก็ตในช่วงโลว์ซีซั่น ซึ่งทางชมรมได้จัดมาทุกปี และปีนี้ได้จัดขึ้นที่หาดกะหลิม เป็นครั้งที่ 4 แล้ว
และทุกๆปีที่ได้มีการแข่งขันนั้น ได้รับความสนใจจากนักกีฬาโต้คลื่นและนักท่องเที่ยวจากประเทศต่างๆ มากมาย อาทิเช่น ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา, ประเทศออสเตรเลีย, ประเทศอังกฤษ, ประเทศแอฟริกาใต้, กลุ่มประเทศยุโรป และเพื่อนบ้านประเทศเอเชียเช่น ญี่ปุ่น, ไต้หวัน, มาเลเซีย, สิงคโปร์ และอินโดนีเชียเป็นต้น อีกทั้งรายการการแข่งขันที่หาดกะหลิมนี้ ได้ถูกบันทึกในปฏิทินรายการแข่งขันกระดานโต้คลื่นประจำปีของ เวบไซท์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับกีฬาโต้คลื่นต่างๆทั่วโลกแล้ว
การแข่งขันกระดานโต้คลื่นในครั้งนี้ ทางชมรมนักโต้คลื่นภูเก็ต หวังว่าจะได้ช่วยส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวของประเทศไทยแล้ว ยังคงเป็นโครงการที่ช่วยพัฒนาฝีมือนักกระดานโต้คลื่นไทย ให้มีฝีมือทัดเทียมในระดับสากลอีกด้วย
หลักการและเหตุผล
1. เพื่อร่วมสนับสนุนให้เยาวชนในจังหวัดภูเก็ต และ หมู่บ้านกะหลิม รวมทั้งพื้นที่ใกล้เคียง ได้ออกกำลังกายและเล่นกีฬาเพื่อห่างไกลจากยาเสพติด และมีสุขภาพแข็งแรง
2. เพื่อร่วมส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยว ของจังหวัดภูเก็ต โดยเฉพาะในช่วง โลว์ซีซั่น
3. เพื่อเป็นการประชาสัมพันธ์ การเล่นกีฬากระดานโต้คลื่นให้ประชาชนไทยได้รู้จัก และมีความสนใจ
4. เพื่อสนับสนุนนักกีฬาโต้ลื่นไทย ได้มีโอกาสทดสอบฝีมือกับนักกีฬาโต้คลื่นจากประเทศต่างๆทั่วโลก
วัน และเวลาในการจัดการแข่งขัน
วันศุกร์ที่ 18, เสาร์ที่ 19 และอาทิตย์ ที่ 20 กรกฎาคม 2551 เนื่องจากเป็นช่วงที่คลื่นมีกำลังพอเหมาะสำหรับการเล่นกีฬากระดานโต้คลื่น
รายละเอียดการแข่งขัน
การแข่งขันจะแบ่งเป็น 3 รุ่น ดังนี้
1. รุ่นทั่วไป (Open Division)
จะจำกัดนักโต้คลื่นที่ 64 คน (16 heats) และใช้กระดานโต้คลื่นขนาดสั้นเท่านั้น (Short Board � 7� maximum) จัดการแข่งขัน ทั้ง 3 วัน
2. รุ่นเยาวชน อายุไม่เกิน 14 ปี (Groms Division)
คาดว่าจะมีผู้เข้าร่มแข่งขัน ประมาณ 16 คน (4 heats) จะจัดการแข่งขัน 2 วัน เสาร์ และอาทิตย์
3. รุ่นกระดานยาว (Longboard Division)
จะจำกัดนักโต้คลื่นที่ 24 คน (6 heats) และใช้กระดานโต้คลื่นขนาดยาวเท่านั้น (Long Board � 8�++ with Malibu shape) จัดการแข่งขัน ทั้ง 3 วัน
* เวลาในการแข่งขันจะสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงได้เนื่องจาก สภาพคลื่น และเวลาขึ้น-ลง ของน้ำทะเล
