Cronulla Point- Saturday 17th of June – 2006
Australian Nick Ormerod takes out the Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge trials.
The Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge Trials – presented by Rockstar Games, part of The Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge on the IBA World Men’s Tour has been won by Australian Nick Ormerod in solid 6ft conditions out Cronulla Point. The Southerly swell which produced slightly smaller waves on Friday continued to build all day.Ormerod who comes from Queensland took out the trials event dedicated to Cronulla legend Brett Young. A field of 96 competitors battled there way through 5 rounds in hope of reaching the semi finals. Ormerod was one of the standouts through out the event and now gains automatic entry into the main draw of The Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge with six others when the waiting period for the main event starts on the 27th of June.
At the presentation MC – Terry McKenna said that anyone who wins this trials event should be extremely proud, especially since it was dedicated to Brett Young who was such an inspirational individual and such a dedicated bodyboarder. He helped paved the way for future aspiring professional athletes on a national and global scale, especially in Japan of which he called his second home.
After the presentation Mark Fordham added – “This event really shows the true numbers of world class bodyboarders situated in Australia. I am so stoked with the level of bodyboarding that was presented to judges over the two days of competition. Also not forgetting the International riders that made their way from countries like Portugal, France, Hawaii, New Zealand, USA and the Reunion Islands, they all surfed so well and I am honored that they travelled this far to compete in this prestigious event. There were so many standouts – it is just unfortunate that only seven trialist make it to the main event.
With all new fresh faces apart from Nick Ormerod and Portugal’s Hugo Pinheiro this years challenge looks set to be one of the most exciting to date. Stay tuned to www.cronullasharkislandchallenge.com for more info.
