New surf movie in the making ‘Surf Sistahs’
This is a story about May, a young pro surfer, 20 something, who loses her fiance’ in a freak set in Waimea Bay. May realizes the fragility of life and futility of a frenetic lifestyle. She seeks solace by starting a surf school called “Surf Sistahs”.While battling the demons of her past… she teaches her students about faith, courage, and camaraderie through the sheer joy and love of soul surfing. Film Outline: This is a story of five girls and the ideal world of soul surfing. May, twenty something, was a competitive surfer. She traveled the globe, entered many surf contests, and sponsors sought her out. She was always looking for the best and biggest waves around. Until one day, her life changed. Her fiancé Jason, also a competitive surfer, dies tragically while surfing. May decides to quit competitive surfing and open a surf school to give back to the community and get back to the reason she began to surf in the first place — simply for the pure love of it. And by doing so, she perpetuates the idea of soul surfing.
We focus on four girls in her school. They all have varying degrees of surfing aptitude. Haley, twenty something, is a kind-hearted girl who is in desperate need of building her confidence. Her confidence has been shattered by an abusive, controlling boyfriend named Kai. Surfing monster waves would definitely build her self-esteem if she can summon the courage to once again ride one. Maile, also twenty something, is an aggressive, competitive surfer who is out to win contests and snag sponsors. She is the perfect example of the commercial side of surfing.
Faith, nine, is an awe-struck, innocent, eager, beginning surfer who has a mysterious illness, yet finds the strength to do what she loves the most — surf. She is the polar opposite of Maile, which is the example of the purest side of surfing. Lani, a scandalous dancer/performer, adds excitement to the band of surf sistahs. During her off hours, Lani is in the water surfing her favorite breaks.
These girls have different reasons for joining the surf school and surfing in general, but one thing they have in common is that they love to surf. What surfing brings to them is immeasurable. All the worries and problems that may befall their lives can be set aside by one great ride. And hopefully, many more. Through Mays tutelage they will learn about faith, courage, and camaraderie in themselves and in others. And at the same time, May gets a lesson herself through them. She can finally put to rest whatever it is that has been haunting her.
