Koh Phi Phi Leh-Phi Phi Leh Island

More Information

Phi Phi Leh Island is just offshore from Phi Phi Don Island. It is a beautiful island with very high sheer cliff faces dropping vertically into the water. The main features of this island are the limestone caves, the most famous being Viking Cave, famous for its birds nests.

The other dramatic feature is the Sea Lake Ao Pileh, which has been eroded over millions of years, the clear crystal waters are perfect for swimming. The entire island can be accessed by longtail boat or on one of the many organised tours from Phuket island.

Phi Phi Leh Island

Maya Bay became famous from the filming of the movie 'The Beach', the bay is on the west side of Phi Phi Leh and is a beautiful place to snorkel and swim with many colourful reef fish which will eat from your hand.

Viking Cave is located in the face of cliffs on Phi Phi Leh Island and gets its name from the colour paintings appearing on one part of the cave's wall with depictions vaguely resembling the long boats of the Vikings.

It is also a very popular cave for the famous bird's nest gatherers, who risk their lives to climb thin stalks of bamboo to reach this golden nest made from bird saliva. Cruising around the limestone island monoliths of Krabi it is common to see thin stalks of bamboo inside caves many hundreds of feet up in the cliff faces.

Viking Cave

This particular type of bird's nest is made by the Forktail Swift and is regarded, by especially the Chinese, as the food of kings only eaten on special occasions. It is also regarded as an elixir of life giving the eater unfound strength and vitality.

Bird's nests can fetch up to and over 1000 dollars per kilogram for the pleasure of eating. In Thailand you can find many restaurants specialising in cooking this delicacy in the form of bird's nest soup and many drinks sold in local shops contain the famous Forktail Swift's bird nest.
