About Kamala Beach
Kamala Beach is approximately 15 kilometres north of Patong by road. Although the area has developed considerably, it still retains more of a village atmosphere than many of Phuket’s larger resort destinations.
The beach is backed by restaurants, cafés, massage shops, small hotels and larger resorts. Visitors can find everything from simple local meals to international restaurants within walking distance of the beach.
Kamala’s main road has supermarkets, banks, shops, restaurants and local market stalls. The beachfront roads are generally quieter, although traffic around the village can become busy during the evening.
The Southern and Central Beach
The southern part of Kamala is closest to the older village and contains a variety of smaller hotels, restaurants and local businesses. The central section provides convenient access to beachfront dining, accommodation and other visitor facilities.
This part of the beach can become busy during Phuket’s dry season, particularly around the most accessible entrances. Walking farther along the beach will often lead to a quieter area.
The road commonly known as Rim Hat runs close to the southern beachfront. Its name roughly means “along the beach,” and the surrounding streets contain a mixture of local homes, guesthouses, restaurants and small hotels.
The Northern End of Kamala
The northern end of Kamala generally has a more open feel than the southern village area. It can be a pleasant place for walking, relaxing on the sand and watching the sunset.
Restaurants, resorts and beach facilities have expanded in this area over the years, so it is no longer completely undeveloped. However, visitors can still usually find quieter sections away from the main entrances.
Swimming at Kamala Beach
Swimming conditions at Kamala change with the seasons. The water is often calmer during Phuket’s dry season, approximately November through April, but conditions can still vary from day to day.
During the southwest monsoon season, normally May through October, Kamala can receive waves, strong currents and rip currents. Red warning flags mean that the water is unsafe for swimming.
- Always follow the warning flags displayed on the beach.
- Swim in a supervised area when lifeguards are present.
- Keep children close and under active supervision.
- Do not assume that calm-looking water is free from currents.
- Ask a lifeguard or experienced local if you are uncertain.
Surfing at Kamala Beach
Kamala receives surf during Phuket’s southwest monsoon season. The beach has several different sections, and the waves can change considerably with the swell direction, tide and sandbanks.
Some days provide manageable beach-break waves, while larger swells can create stronger currents and more challenging conditions. Anyone unfamiliar with Kamala should check the beach carefully before entering the water.
Saltwater Dreaming normally holds its surf lessons at Bang Tao Beach, but Kamala may occasionally be used when its conditions are more suitable.

Snorkelling at Kamala
Snorkelling may be possible around the rocky edges of the bay when the sea is calm and visibility is clear, most commonly during the dry season. Do not snorkel when waves are breaking against the rocks or warning flags are displayed.
Boat traffic and changing currents can also create hazards. Conditions should always be checked locally before entering the water.
Food and Local Life
Kamala offers a broad range of food, from local Thai and Thai-Muslim dishes to seafood and international restaurants. Small restaurants and market stalls away from the beachfront are often less expensive than those directly beside the sand.
The local markets are good places to look for prepared food, fresh produce and everyday goods. Market schedules can change, so ask locally for the current days and location.
Things to Do Around Kamala
Kamala is home to Phuket FantaSea, a large cultural theme park and entertainment complex. Show days and opening hours can change, so check the current schedule before travelling there.
The village is also conveniently positioned for visiting Surin Beach to the north, Patong to the south and the nearby viewpoint roads along Phuket’s west coast.
Is Kamala Beach Worth Visiting?
Kamala is a good choice for visitors who want a convenient Phuket beach without staying in the busiest part of Patong. It has plenty of restaurants and accommodation while still maintaining a recognisable local community.
The beach is suitable for relaxing and walking throughout the year, while swimming, snorkelling and surfing depend on the conditions and season.
