Bang Tao Beach Phuket

Updated for 2026

Bang Tao Beach is one of Phuket’s longest beaches, stretching for several kilometres along the island’s west coast. Its length gives it several distinct areas, from the local community and sheltered southern corner to the resorts around Laguna and the quieter northern end.

About Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao has a broad sandy shoreline backed by casuarina trees, beach restaurants, hotels and residential areas. Because the beach is so long, conditions and atmosphere vary considerably from one end to the other.

The central section is closely connected with the Laguna Phuket resort area. Here you will find larger resorts, restaurants, beach clubs and other visitor facilities. The surrounding Cherng Talay area has also grown into one of Phuket’s busiest dining and shopping districts.

The Southern End of Bang Tao

The southern end retains more of Bang Tao’s local character, with fishing boats, small restaurants and access to a more sheltered section of the bay. It is a pleasant place for a beach walk and one of the best parts of Bang Tao for watching the sunset.

When southwest monsoon swells become large, surfers sometimes use this corner because it can be more protected than the open sections of the beach. Conditions still change from day to day, so beginners should seek local advice before entering the water.

Saltwater Dreaming’s Phuket Surf School runs lessons at Bang Tao when the waves and weather are suitable. Lessons are adapted to the student’s experience and the conditions on the day.

Bang Tao Village and Local Food

Bang Tao is home to one of Phuket’s established Muslim communities. The village and surrounding streets are good places to try local Thai-Muslim dishes and see a side of the area that is very different from the nearby resorts.

Local markets sell fresh produce, prepared food, clothing and household goods. Market schedules and locations can change, so it is worth checking locally before making a special journey.

Traffic around the main roads can become busy in the evening. Take particular care when crossing, especially near markets and restaurant areas.

Cherng Talay and Laguna

Travelling inland from Bang Tao brings you to Cherng Talay, a historic community that is now surrounded by restaurants, shops and new development. Chinese shrines and Buddhist temples reflect the area’s cultural history.

Cherng Talay is especially active during Phuket’s annual Vegetarian Festival, when ceremonies and processions take place around local Chinese shrines.

The Laguna and Boat Avenue areas provide a wide range of international restaurants, supermarkets and shops. Prices are generally higher than in the traditional village areas, but the choice and convenience make this part of Bang Tao popular with visitors and residents.

The Northern End of Bang Tao

The northern end is generally quieter and less built up than the central part of the beach. It can be a lovely place for walking, relaxing and escaping the busier resort areas.

Take care when swimming near the northern end and around stream outlets. Sandbanks and currents can change, particularly during the southwest monsoon season.

Swimming Safety

Bang Tao can appear calm from the shore, but strong currents and rip currents can develop during the surf season. Always follow the warning flags and instructions from lifeguards when they are present.

  • Do not swim where red flags are displayed.
  • Keep children close to shore and under supervision.
  • Avoid swimming beside stream outlets after heavy rain.
  • Ask locally if you are uncertain about the conditions.
  • Choose a supervised surf lesson if you are new to the ocean.

Is Bang Tao Beach Worth Visiting?

Bang Tao is a good choice for visitors who want a long beach with several different experiences in one area. You can explore the local village, eat beside the beach, visit the restaurants around Cherng Talay or find a quieter stretch of sand toward the north.

For surfers, the beach is most relevant during Phuket’s southwest monsoon surf season. Beginners should check the conditions carefully and use a qualified local instructor.
