Surfing on Koh Lanta

Updated for 2026

Koh Lanta is not one of Thailand’s big-name surf destinations, but it can get fun little waves during the south-west monsoon season. The surf is usually softer than Phuket or Khao Lak, making it better suited to longboards, stand up paddleboards and beginners when the conditions are right.

Klong Dao Beach

The best surf spot on Koh Lanta island is Klong Dao Beach. It is a big bay, approximately 2 km long, with a shallow sandy bottom. There are several sand bars that get nice waves and reports say that it can hold a swell up to 3 to 4 metres before becoming completely unrideable.

The northern end of Klong Dao Beach also has rideable waves near Laem Kho Kwang and is a good spot to head when the surf is big. In general though, Koh Lanta is suited for longboards, stand up paddleboards and beginners as the waves on average are about waist high.

Local Note

Koh Lanta surf is usually more about having a board handy than planning a full surf trip. If you are already staying on the island during the wet season, check Klong Dao and the nearby sand banks. If it is flat, you still have a very good excuse to sit on the beach and do not much at all.

Wet Season Surf

During the wet monsoon season, the wind swings more south-westerly and the west-facing beaches of Koh Lanta are exposed to weather, waves and ocean debris. This is when there is the best chance of surf, but it is also when the beaches can be rougher and less clear for swimming.

The same season that creates the waves can also bring messy conditions, rain squalls and onshore wind. If you get a clean morning with small swell, that is usually when Koh Lanta is at its most fun for surfing.

Safety and Expectations

Koh Lanta is usually a softer surf option, but wet-season beaches can still have currents, debris, jellyfish, poor visibility and messy shorebreak. Check conditions before going in, and if you are learning, choose a small clean day rather than a stormy one.

Staying on Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a good island for a relaxed beach holiday with the bonus of possible surf during the wet season. Klong Dao is one of the easiest areas to stay if you want to check the main surf beach regularly, while the rest of the island offers quieter beaches, restaurants and a slower pace than Phuket.
