Surfing Koh Chon Thailand

Koh Chon, near Nakhon Si Thammarat, is one of the more obscure surf reports we have received over the years. There is not much published information about surfing here, but the old photos sent in to us show that this part of the Gulf coast can have some potential when the northern monsoon sends swell down the coast.

Surfing Koh Chon
These are photos of Koh Chon, near Nakhon Si Thammarat. Reports say that Koh Chon does get quite good, but we must admit that surfing in this area is basically unknown and this is the first report we have heard.
The surf photos below of Koh Chon show some potential, although the waves look big, messy and wind affected. It would be good to see this part of the coast on a smooth day with the right swell direction.
This part of the coast picks up a lot of swell from the northern monsoons. Because it is on the Gulf side of Thailand, it works on a different weather pattern from Phuket, Khao Lak and the Andaman coast.
Local Note
This is not a polished surf guide. It is more of an old contributed report from a part of Thailand where surf information is still thin. If you are travelling around Nakhon Si Thammarat with a board, it may be worth asking local surfers around the better-known Gulf coast surf areas, especially Sichon, before going looking for Koh Chon.

Nakhon Si Thammarat Surf Coast
Surfing around Nakhon Si Thammarat is still much less documented than Phuket or Khao Lak, but the area is not completely unknown anymore. Sichon Beach and nearby Gulf coast beaches now appear in surf forecasts and there is some local surf activity in the region.
If you are serious about checking this coast, it is worth starting around the known beach areas first, asking local surfers, and watching the wind and swell during the northern monsoon period. A lot of the waves on this side of Thailand can be short-lived and wind affected, so timing matters.
Safety and Expectations
Koh Chon should be treated as an exploration spot, not a reliable surf destination. Check access, rocks, currents, fishing gear, weather and your exit point before paddling out. If the waves are big and messy, it may be better to take a photo, have a look around, and wait for a cleaner day. No shame in that. Fewer stitches too.
